He resigns immediately but finds himself pursued by the Special Higher Police—acting on behalf of the Home Ministry—who fear he might leak state secrets. One night, after spending time with a courtesan named O-Sayo, he is approached by a man named Noro—who suffers from impotence—with a strange request: to sleep with a woman known as "Madame Pearl" in his stead...
