Vajramuni
Born May 10, 1944 · Kanakapalya, Bangalore India
**Sadananda Sagar** (born 10 May 1944, died 5 January 2006), universally known by his screen name **Vajramuni**, was a legendary Indian actor who worked predominantly in Kannada cinema. Regarded as one of the finest antagonists in the history of Sandalwood, he acted in over 300 films during a career spanning more than three decades. Known for his thundering voice and intense screen presence, he earned the popular epithets *Nata Bhairava* and *Nata Bhayankara*. Born in Kanakanapalya in Bangalore, Karnataka, into a Hallikar Vokkaliga family, he was named after the Hindu deity Vajramuneshwara. He held a degree in cinematography but eventually discovered his true passion on the stage. While acting in the play *Prachanda Ravana*, he caught the attention of legendary filmmaker Puttanna Kanagal, who initially offered him a role in the film *Saavira Mettilu*. When that project did not immediately take off, Kanagal cast him as the primary antagonist in *Mallammana Pavada* (1969), which marked his official feature film debut. Vajramuni quickly established himself as the premier villain of Kannada cinema during the 1970s and 1980s. He became particularly famous for his frequent and iconic on-screen clashes with matinee idol Dr. Rajkumar, creating some of the most memorable hero and villain dynamics in the industry. He delivered unforgettable performances in massive blockbusters and critically acclaimed films such as *Sipayi Ramu* (1971), *Bangaarada Manushya* (1972), *Sampathige Saval* (1974), *Daari Tappida Maga* (1975), *Babruvahana* (1977), *Shankar Guru* (1978), and *Aakasmika* (1993). While primarily known for his villainous portrayals, his immense versatility allowed him to occasionally take on prominent character roles with equal conviction. His profound contributions to Kannada cinema were highly decorated. He won the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in *Bettale Seve* (1982 to 1983). In 2005, he was honored with the Lifetime Contribution to Kannada Cinema Award by the Government of Karnataka in recognition of his extraordinary cinematic legacy. He passed away on 5 January 2006 in Bangalore due to prolonged diabetes and kidney-related illnesses.
